TTA Foundation extends scholarship application deadline to May 1

The Texas Telephone Association Foundation is extending the application deadline for 2020-2021 scholarships to May 1.

After schools were closed across Texas because of the coronavirus pandemic, the TTA Foundation is extending the deadline to give students more time to apply.

The foundation this year will award six four-year scholarships of $2000 a year to high school students entering college for the 2020-2021 school year.

“Texas telecommunications companies’ longstanding commitment to developing a skilled workforce begins at home in our local communities,’’ said Scott Stringer, director of regulatory and government affairs for CenturyLink and a member of the TTA Foundation board of directors.

Charlie Greenberg, president of Btel and a member of the TTA Foundation board of directors, said: “This is a challenging time for state and our nation. As the cost of attending state universities continues to spiral ever higher, our Texas telecommunications industry is investing in our students as an investment in the future of Texas.’’

Since 1992, the TTA Foundation has awarded more than $400,000 in scholarships to Texas students.

The foundation is a nonprofit, philanthropic organization founded to help further the understanding of telecommunications and advanced services such as broadband, cybersecurity and cloud services.

To be eligible for a TTA Foundation scholarship, students must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher and be planning to attend a Texas college or university in fall 2020.

Special consideration will be given to students planning to pursue a degree in fields of study related to telecommunications such as math, business, education, technology, engineering and computer science and live within service areas supported by TTA member companies.

High school coursework, extracurricular or community activities and demonstrated leadership and financial need also will be considered.

The TTA scholarship program is made possible by contributions from TTA members and associate members. Scholarship applications are due May 1 and will be awarded in June.

TTA is also now accepting applications directly from students. More information and an application can be found here.
